The Canadian Army is moving ahead with plans to buy a U.S.-made rocket artillery system, even as Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged to cut back on American military purchases.

The Department of National Defence confirmed Canada submitted a request to the U.S. government on Dec. 14, 2024, for pricing and availability information on the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, known as HIMARS.

“This step formally requested pricing and availability information for the proposed purchase, as well as the delivery schedule,” DND spokeswoman Cheryl Forrest said in an email. She added that officials had reviewed “the delivery schedules of all potential solutions that could achieve the Canadian Army’s capability targets.”
