Winnipeg city staff have reduced the projected cost of combined sewer overflow (CSO) relief work by more than $1 billion, prompting two councillors to push for a closer look at cost overruns at the North End Sewage Treatment Plant.

Councillors Brian Mayes (St. Vital) and Sherri Rollins (Fort Rouge–East Fort Garry) said in a release today that they will introduce a motion at Thursday’s council meeting calling for a report from the City’s Chief Construction Officer (CCO) to the Water and Waste Committee. They want to know what lessons from the sewer overflow program can be applied to the North End plant, where costs have escalated sharply.
