HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - On this date in 1970, the old Brinkley Bridge collapsed in Wayne County, WV.

It became famous during the presidential campaign of 1960 when NBC News Anchor David Brinkley did a report on the bridge, which sat on Route 52 just outside Wayne.

The report was about the deplorable condition of the bridge as just one example of what the whole Appalachian region was facing.

Political leaders immediately ordered the bridge close for repairs and it became known as the Brinkley Bridge thereafter.
