The Bay Area of California was shaken by a magnitude 4.3 earthquake overnight, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and although the experience is rare in Michigan, it's not unheard of.

The San Francisco area temblor struck just before 3 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, and set off phone alerts, the Geological Survey said . The epicenter was located less than 2 miles east of Berkeley, and the earthquake was felt in San Francisco and San Jose.
