NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Newport police said that an armed carjacking suspect allegedly involved in two successive vehicle thefts Monday morning has been apprehended in Somerset, Mass.

According to Newport Police Department Captain Kevin A. Moreira, the first incident occurred at approximately 8:02 a.m. at the Middletown Shaw’s supermarket on East Main Road.

The suspect allegedly fled toward Newport from the Shaw’s in a stolen Jeep SUV.

The Jeep was involved in a crash, which disabled the vehicle near the Admiral Kalbfus Road rotary in Newport, according to police dispatch.

The suspect then allegedly pointed a handgun at several drivers before fleeing on foot toward the Admirality apartment complex on Kalbfus Road according to Captain Moreira.
