SOUTHPORT, N.Y. (WETM) – An Elmira man has been arrested on various charges after an incident involving a fake check that was cashed at a bank in Southport in 2024.

Anthony Brooks, 21, was arrested on the charges of criminal possession of a forged instrument in the first degree (class C felony) and grand larceny in the third degree (class D felony), as stated in a release from the Chemung County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say Brooks was charged with the crimes after an incident that occurred on Sept. 25, 2024, in the Town of Southport. At this time, officials say a deputy from the sheriff's office was called to the Solutions Federal Credit Union for the report of an altered, fake U.S. Treasury check totaling $23,020 that was cashed by Brooks.
