WORCESTER — In recent weeks, the Red Sox have turned to young pitchers Payton Tolle, Kyle Harrison and Connelly Early as reinforcements from Triple-A. Righty David Sandlin, though, has not gotten the call after a role change aimed to ready him for the big leagues went sideways.
Sandlin, who MLB Pipeline ranks as the No. 10 prospect in Boston’s system, had a stellar start to his season at Double-A Portland, pitching to a 3.61 ERA in 82 ⅓ innings over 17 games (13 starts). Along with Early, he was promoted to Worcester at the end of July and pitched well in his debut there, allowing one run in five innings in a start on August 1.
After that, with the Red Sox looking for high-octane options for their bullpen down the stretch, the organization decided to try Sandlin in a relief role . B
