New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Monday that Moscow is prepared to extend the New START nuclear arms control treaty for an additional year beyond its February 2026 expiration, contingent on the United States adopting a similar stance.

Speaking at a Kremlin meeting, Putin emphasised Russia’s lack of interest in escalating tensions or triggering an arms race. “Russia is prepared to continue adhering to the central quantitative limitations of the New START Treaty for one year after February 5, 2026,” Putin stated in a televised address.
