LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

When Animal Care Society first opened its shelter in 1988, it became the state of Kentucky's first no-kill animal shelter.

According to one of the organization’s directors, Sara McWaters, the Animal Care Society and organizations like it across the country are at a tipping point.

"Adoptions are down," McWaters said. "We are finding it very hard to get our dogs adopted, especially our bigger dogs. The cost of raising them is higher."

Happening Saturday, the organization will celebrate its biggest fundraiser of the year with the 22nd annual Bark in the Park at Gheens Lodge at Beckley Creek.

The event runs from 8 a.m. until noon and will feature a fun run for people to do with their dogs, more than 40 vendors, and a costume contest for pets.
