BLOOMINGTON ( 25News Now ) - The Bloomington City Council is expected to vote Monday evening whether to continue taxing shoppers for groceries, action that city staffers said is necessary to keep the government on solid financial footing.

The state government stops collecting the tax on Jan. 1, so it’s up to local elected officials whether to continue charging shoppers a penny for every dollar of groceries.

The state tax brings in just over $3 million a year for Bloomington. Without continuing the tax, the city faces a $1.5 million deficit, according to a release.

In Peoria Heights, the mayor used his veto power to reject the village board’s decision approving the tax. That apparently will not happen in Bloomington.
