KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOOD) — With the new fiscal year starting next week, Michigan lawmakers still haven't reached a budget deal.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer visited a Kentwood elementary school Monday to serve up lunches and call on the Legislature to pass a budget. Her office says the version of the budget passed by the Democrat-led Senate has money for a program providing free breakfast and lunch for students, though House Republicans' version does not.

Whitmer, a Democrat, and House Speaker Matt Hall, R-Richland, both seem to share the belief that a budget can be hammered out before the new fiscal year starts Oct. 1.
