NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The Governor's Office presented new satellite data over New Mexico, suggesting big improvements in the amount of methane escaping into the atmosphere. The latest study shows that a little over 1% of the methane taken out of the ground is being inadvertently released into the atmosphere. That's much better than neighboring fields in Texas, which are seeing just over 3% of their gas escaping. "Methane, unfortunately, is a very potent greenhouse gas. It is 86 times more potent over a 20-year period than even CO2," said Camilla Feibelman, Director of the Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter.
