A 55-year-old Central Huron resident lost $130,000 in an online investment scam involving cryptocurrency and the stock market, Huron County OPP say.

Police said they were contacted on Aug. 30 by a resident who reported losing the money between June and August after responding to an investment ad on a popular messaging app.

The victim believed their money was being placed in the stock market and cryptocurrency, police said.

They were promised high returns, but when the suspect demanded more money, the victim grew suspicious and later realized they had been scammed, police said.

Canadians reported $647 million in fraud-related losses in 2024, though it’s estimated that only five to 10 per cent of victims report to authorities, according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC).
