Five people were killed in four violent incidents in Montgomery between Friday and Sunday, and city officials said none of the deaths had to happen.

Three of the homicides were domestic-related, and the other two happened between people who knew each other.

“These cases are very specific to the people involved,” Police Chief Jim Graboys said during a Monday press conference.

“It’s heartbreaking because it means people could have walked away. “People could have decided to turn the other cheek or decided to back down.”

“We have strong leads in these cases,” the chief said. “Suspects will be charged and held accountable, and they will face justice in a court of law.”

Mayor Steven Reed, who addressed the violence in a Sunday statement , joined Graboys at the press conference.
