MURFREESBORO, Ark. — A family from Cookson, Oklahoma found an almost 3-carat brown diamond at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro on Sept. 13, according to the Arkansas State Parks department (ASP).

ASP reports that Raynae Madison and her family were visiting Arkansas for the weekend to celebrate a family birthday when they decided to stop by the park. The family reportedly picked a spot to dig and got to work with a digging kit they purchased at the dollar store.

They were digging when Madison reported noticing an oblong, shiny stone. Madison told ASP she didn't think it was a diamond at first, because it was so large, "I thought it looked really neat, but I wasn't sure what it was."

The brown diamond was taken to the main office, where it weighed in at 2.79 carats.
