OMAHA, Neb. —

Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr. announced a pilot plan to address homeless encampments.

The mayor said this will be more appropriate than the ordinance before the Omaha City Council to criminalize encampments on public property.

Monday's joint announcement included Ewing and Threshold CoC , an umbrella organization for homeless outreach organizations.

For the next 30 days, Threshold will be developing policies and procedures for the plan, and then the city is asking for six months to see how it goes.

In that time, Ewing said they will also be developing a long-term plan.
