In Anchorage, the city has now seen 11 pedestrians killed in crashes so far this year. The latest tragedy happened Saturday in a hit-and-run on Minnesota Drive.
Police say a mid-size sedan struck a pedestrian who was on the sidewalk and then hit another vehicle while fleeing the scene. Medics from the Anchorage Fire Department arrived, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
The driver, identified as 28-year-old Joshua Vargas, was taken into custody and now faces multiple charges, including manslaughter, DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving with a canceled license.
Authorities say witnesses helped locate Vargas, and the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
