NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — One Newport News teacher is sharing a painful lesson after losing her husband to a rare but deadly flesh-eating bacterium called vibrio.

Joyce D'Arcy is mourning her husband Derek's death, which occurred just 13 days after a seemingly harmless trip to Virginia Beach in August, their favorite place.

"It came from our favorite place to go — Virginia Beach was our favorite place to go," Joyce said. "It's just so sad that the best place we like to go is where he got sick."

The couple’s day at the beach involved a simple, calf-high wade in the water, which was all it took for the bacteria to enter Derek's body through a small, open cut on his leg. Four days later, Joyce noticed a purple stripe on his leg.

"The skin was just purple," she recalled.
