OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - When Union Station opened in 1931, it was a bustling gateway to Omaha.

By the early 1970s, however, the trains had stopped — and the station was nearly lost.

In 1975, it reopened as The Durham Museum, dedicated to honoring the past and telling Omaha’s story.

Fifty years later, that mission continues.

“While we collect many stories around Omaha, the story of ourselves is one that we should be remembering and keeping track of so we know where we started and where we’ve come since that beginning,” Durham Museum Curator Chelsea Olmstead said.

To mark the milestone, The Durham has opened a new exhibit called The First 50 Years .

“It tells you about the path that we took from start to finish to become the museum that we are today,” Olmstead said.
