Even the federal Liberals’ foremost expert on human rights — former Liberal cabinet minister Irwin Cotler — says that unilaterally recognizing the “state of Palestine” without Hamas first releasing the remaining Israeli hostages and disarming is a historic blunder.
Writing in the in a column co-authored with law professor Orde Kittrie, Cotler described it as “a mistake, which would regrettably reward terrorism, make peace less likely and contradict the longstanding international legal frameworks for recognizing statehood and for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
