A big project is now complete at one well-loved spot in Sitka. The staircase at the Halibut Point State Recreation Site has been repaired and restored.

Since the 1980s, the Halibut Point State Recreation Site had been connected by a set of stairs.
And now the vital link is back in action.
The restoration project, now officially complete, has been in the works since 2023. A storm blew through the park, taking down trees and crushing the original staircase.
Ben Hughey is the executive director of Sitka Trail Works: "Since that time, no one’s been able to use this staircase that links the north end of this beloved state park to the south end of Magic Island and this loop trail system."
Hughey told Your Alaska Link that securing the
