ALBANY, New York (WWNY) - Looking to improve safety in New York prisons, 10 changes have been proposed by the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, and lawmakers are optimistic.

HALT, the Humane Alternatives to Long-Term Solitary Confinement Act, has been controversial since its enactment in New York correctional facilities back in 2021 for perceived leniency towards incarcerated people.

But, 10 revisions recently proposed by DOCCS, with help from unions like the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association, could improve safety for correctional facility staff and incarcerated individuals.
