SPRING HIIL, Tenn. (WKRN) — Lithium batteries self-ignite thousands of times every year, leading to fires and damage.

According to a 2018 report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were more than 25,000 incidents of fire or overheating of lithium-ion batteries over a five-year period.

Fire investigators in Spring Hill said a malfunctioning lithium-ion battery led to a fire in a garage over the weekend.

Video provided by Spring Hill police shows first responders arrive to the residence just four minutes after a neighbor called 911.

Since firefighters were unsure if anyone was inside, they kicked the front door open and rescued a dog who was home alone.
