MADISON — A group of Republican lawmakers are proposing legislation to close what they call a 'THC loophole' in Wisconsin's hemp laws, partly citing an incident last year where 85 people ate contaminated pizza in Stoughton.

The proposed bill would redefine what constitutes legal hemp — a plant in the same family as marijuana — and eliminate hemp-derived products (like gummies, vapes and drinks) that can have psychoactive effects from the market.

This bill closes the loophole by:

Redefining hemp to include total THC, including both delta-9 THC and THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, a precursor)

Clarifying that only hemp grown for specified industrial or research purposes qualifies as “industrial hemp.”

Excluding non-industrial “hemp-derived cannabinoid products” intended for human or
