ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- An Elmira man was arrested for allegedly cashing a fake check worth over $23,000, according to the Chemung County Sheriff's Office.
Anthony Brooks, 21, is charged with Grand Larceny and Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument.
Brooks allegedly cashed a fake U.S. Treasury check worth $23,020 at a credit union in the Town of Southport. The check was confirmed fraudulent by the U.S. Treasury Department. Law enforcement says he was given the check by another person and agreed to cash it in exchange for some of the money.
Additional arrests are expected. Brooks was arraigned and released. He will return to court at a later date.
