The Gilbert Public Schools governing board will review a number of policies during its Sept. 23 meeting.

The district has scheduled first reads on five policies:

Interscholastic athletics;

Assessments;

Governing board authority to employ;

Department of Child Safety interview and custody;

Police interview notification.

First reads are an initial step in a multistage process of formally adopting or revising school district rules. The first read is an informational item for the board, staff and the public, and it typically does not involve voting or official action. But it may involve discussion.

After the first read, the policies go back to the board's policy committee, which for GPS is a committee of the whole.

The policies then come back to the board at a meeting for adoption.
