NORTH CAROLINA, USA — One month after the deadly stabbing of Iryna Zarutska on Charlotte’s LYNX Blue Line, state lawmakers have introduced legislation known as “Iryna’s Law,” aimed at cracking down on crime and strengthening deterrents.
The bill would eliminate certain cashless bail policies, create stricter bail guidelines for specific crimes and add more oversight for magistrates. Supporters say the legislation is designed to prevent future tragedies.
“It’s a lot better than what we started out with,” Rep. Laura Budd (D-Mecklenburg) said. Still, Budd argued the proposal doesn’t go far enough to address the issues that led to Zarutska’s killing.
