Matias Maccelli is poised to make his mark as the Maple Leafs prepare for their next preseason game. Nick Robertson showcased his skills during Toronto's recent victory over the Ottawa Senators, scoring a goal and demonstrating his trademark hustle. His performance left a strong impression on coach Craig Berube, who is looking for similar contributions from Maccelli.

With the Leafs enjoying a day off after a week of training camp, Maccelli is expected to be in the lineup for Tuesday's matchup against the Senators at Scotiabank Arena. This assumption is bolstered by the fact that many veteran players did not travel to Ottawa. Max Domi, who has been sidelined with a lower-body injury, returned to practice but is not yet ready for game action.

Maccelli's opportunity comes as he auditions for a spot on the right wing alongside captain Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies. While Maccelli may suspect that Domi is still the preferred choice for the regular season, he must seize this chance to impress Berube. The coach has emphasized the importance of chemistry and effective give-and-go plays, similar to the successful partnership between Matthews and Mitch Marner.

Creating scoring opportunities will be crucial for Maccelli. Neither he nor Domi is expected to replicate Marner's contributions, but both must show improved defensive skills, especially when facing top opposing lines. Maccelli needs to make it difficult for Berube to consider moving him to a different line.

In addition to Maccelli, Steven Lorentz has set a strong example with his physical play. Last season, he led Leafs forwards with 199 hits and matched his career high with 19 points. Lorentz, who signed a three-year contract with the Leafs after attending camp on a professional tryout, remains focused on earning his spot on the roster. He recalled advice from former Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour, who told him to approach every camp as if he had to earn his place on the team.

As Maccelli seeks to establish himself, Bobby McMann is also looking to bounce back after a quiet end to last season. He has not scored since March 25, but his size and finishing ability make him a potential fit alongside John Tavares and William Nylander on the second line. Tavares has noted McMann's growth as a player, highlighting his physical dominance and strong shot.

Both Maccelli and McMann have significant opportunities ahead as the Maple Leafs finalize their roster for the upcoming season.
