HONOLULU (Island News) -- The Hawaii State Department of Education named Big Island teacher Elise Hannigan the 2026 Hawaii State Teacher of the Year.

Hannigan received the honor on Friday, Sept. 19, for her work at Keeau High School. She is currently a freshman academy coordinator and senior mentor teacher.

Hannigan was picked out of 15 complex area teachers of the year and one charter school teacher of the year.

During her career, she launched a summer bridge program, helped her academy earn certification and has served on various educational committees.

Hannigan will represent Hawaii in the National Teacher of the Year program.
