Persistent overspends in Canberra's public health system have sparked concerns from the Liberals and Greens that the next budget could blow out and pull the territory further into debt .

ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury said he worried the actual cost of health funding was not accounted for in the budget, while opposition Treasury spokesperson Ed Cocks said the government had a "deeply concerning" track record of wrongly forecasting health costs.

The government underbudgeted for health by more than $200 million in the last two financial years, but expects to spend less in 2025-26 than they did in 2024-25.

But an economist said all governments struggle to forecast health and hospital costs.
