ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (KWQC) - Rock Island City Council has approved plans to close a tax incentive area in the city.
Monday evening, council approved the closure of their 1st Street tax incentive area between 7th and 18th Avenues, because it wasn’t generating enough money.
The 1st Street tax incentive area was created back in 2015, but since its closing, city leaders said they have plans to form a new area they believe will have more success.
Also Monday night, council approved plans to open a new tax incentive area in its place, in the Sunset Business Park, as well as older industrial areas in the city, like along 5th Street, south of 18th Avenue.
City leaders said they believe this will help provide more economic development opportunities in the area.
