MANOA, Hawai'i (Island News) -- Native Hawaiian Student Services is a place where students come to study, research and get academic support here at the University of Hawai'i, but that could soon end at the end of the month with federal funding cuts.
The U.S. Department of Education could be eliminating more than $100 million in funding for student support programs at all 10 UH campuses as part of larger cuts to what it deems "racially-discriminatory" programs across the country.
That includes UH M ā noa's Native Hawaiian Student Services, and that will have real consequences for minority students and faculty.
"It is very scary that I might not be able to have a future with a B.A. in mind," said Hezekiah Kapua'ala. "I might not be able to graduate at some point because of all the cuts
