COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The fight over Ohio’s congressional map kicked off Monday with the first of two required hearings — but only one side showed its hand.

Democrats put forward a plan that would split Ohio’s 15 U.S. House seats nearly down the middle, seven for their party and eight for Republicans.

GOP leaders made it clear they don’t like that idea, but they offered no map of their own and little hint of what they do want.

“It is insulting to the people of Ohio that they have not come up with a proposal,” said House Minority Leader Dani Isaacsohn, a Cincinnati Democrat. “Clearly, they have opinions because they asked very specific questions.”

What Republicans did say is that lawmakers won’t meet the first constitutional deadline to pass a bipartisan map by Sept. 30.
