CEDAR HILL, Texas — When Stacy Mitchell II joined Scouting America in second grade, he did everything a scout can do — until he couldn’t.
Mitchell has a rare, and fatal, muscular disorder called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. His muscles are slowly deteriorating and by 12 he had lost his ability to walk.
“There was times I was questioning if I still wanted to be a scout,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell says accomplishing anything in scouts while in a wheelchair, especially your Eagle Scout — which had long been a dream of his — felt insurmountable.
Nevertheless, Mitchell, a junior at Cedar Hill High School, was determined to try.
Earlier this spring, he had a project and a plan. Then, that plan was disrupted by brain cancer.
He was diagnosed a few months ago.
“I questioned why me,” Mitchell
