NEWAYGO, Mich. — Earlier this year, 13 ON YOUR SIDE shared the news that the Newaygo High School cheer team had won a grant from the Detroit Lions and that the cheerleaders got to visit Ford Field during a Lions preseason game to celebrate. We now know what the team will be doing with that grant money.
The cheer team, which is now in just its fourth year of participating in competitive cheer during the winter sports season, will buy cheer mats. It's an upgrade the cheerleaders say is much needed.
"The past three years, we've been cheering on wrestling mats, which aren't really the same as cheer mats, because they're like a plasticky kind of feeling. And then cheer mats are like carpet, and it's so much easier to do what you need to do," said senior KelliJo Gradert.
