A potentially dangerous situation at Righetti High School was quickly resolved on Monday when a School Resource Deputy confiscated a loaded handgun from a student, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident began around 1:30 p.m., when school staff reported to SRD Reynoso that a male student might be smoking marijuana in a bathroom. When the deputy confronted the student, he refused to comply and attempted to walk away. A struggle ensued, during which SRD Reynoso sustained minor injuries, including a cut on his finger and an abrasion on his elbow.

During the arrest process, deputies discovered multiple marijuana vapes and a loaded .22 caliber revolver hidden in the student’s backpack. The student, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a local hospital
