Mining giant Fortescue has embarrassingly wound back mentions of hydrogen in its plans to decarbonise, as the once-praised power source sees its reputation sour.
Fortescue’s executive chairman Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest previously lauded green hydrogen as critical for the company’s aim of achieving “real zero”– which would mean the company does not produce any emissions.
The company, however, has scrapped several major green hydrogen projects and cut many jobs in the sector in a massive blow to the Albanese government’s renewables roadmap.
Mr Forrest’s 2025 climate plan mentions hydrogen 43 times, significantly less than its plan released in September 2024 which mentioned the fuel source 101 times.
