The government has issued a two-word update over whether it will introduce a new pay-per-mile car tax system - saying there are "no plans". The Labour Party has spoken out over claims pay-per-mile car taxes could be introduced for motorists and road users.

Andrew Ranger, a Labour Party MP for Wrexham, reached out "to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, whether the Government is considering proposals to replace Vehicle Excise Duty with a pay-per-mile road pricing system."

Dan Tomlinson, Exchequer Secretary for HM Treasury, issued a response and said: "The Government has no plans to abolish Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). VED applies to vehicles used or kept on public roads, which does not vary by miles driven.
