Recent letters and opinion pieces urged Gov. Andy Beshear to run for the Senate seat of retiring Mitch McConnell. I agree that Beshear could win, but I also agree with his decision not to run. Here's why.

For starters, Beshear is not a legislator. As governor, he is the chief executive officer of Kentucky. His authority includes the power to issue executive orders and take emergency actions (as we have seen him do in the face of several natural disasters ). He makes appointments to various agencies and departments. He signs bills into law and has veto power . He is the liaison to the federal government on behalf of Kentucky.
