New Delhi: The Karnataka High Court has temporarily stayed the state government’s order that sought to introduce a uniform ceiling of Rs 200 on cinema ticket prices across theatres and multiplexes. The interim order was delivered on Tuesday (September 23) by a single-judge bench led by Justice Ravi Hosamani.

The government had earlier, in July, issued a draft notification under the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) (Amendment) Rules, 2025. The proposal aimed to fix Rs 200, inclusive of entertainment tax, as the maximum ticket price for all films, irrespective of language, venue, or format. The draft also called for the removal of Rule 146 from the existing 2014 framework. It was introduced by the Home Department under Section 19 of the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) Act, 1964.
