MOBILE, Ala. ( WALA ) - A Mobile County man is accused of starving a horse and burning another.

Back in July, court documents say 29-year-old Bobbie Smith Jr. didn’t feed his horse for six months and burned another horse after it died under his care. He’s now charged with two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals and failure to bury livestock.

Those same documents say the starved horse’s name is Buddy.

Tina Gates, founder of White-Gates Farm Equine Rescue, a local organization whose mission is to provide a safe, loving home for horses, said Smith adopted Buddy from her in January.

She said every adopter must meet strict requirements and provide two references.

Gates said Smith passed, but six months later, she got concerning calls.
