After a hot 2-0 start to the 2025 NFL season, things went a little bit sideways for the Green Bay Packers on Sunday as a late interception and a blocked field goal led to the Cleveland Browns nailing a 55-yard walk-off field goal to send the Packers back to Wisconsin with their heads hung low.
The Packers entered the game against the Browns as more than a touchdown favorite, and many folks – including Green Bay offensive tackle Rasheed Walker – had bought into the hype that the team could be on their way to an undefeated season. But usually, it's foolish to attempt to ponder such tall tasks this early in the season, and the Browns proved that point well by knocking off the Packers. And this week, Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur had a message for anyone on his team looking ahead to what they might feel like is inevitable success later in the season.
"The goal — and I’ve said it a million times to you guys, obviously not enough to our team — the goal is to go 1-0 every week," LaFleur said. "It pisses me off when we start talking about things outside of the next game, things that are way down the road."
It's hard to see LaFleur's comments as anything but a direct response to a comment from his offensive lineman that came back around to look quite embarrassing for both himself and his team, and it's hard to say that LaFleur is unjustified in his comments.
Getting ahead of the task at hand in the sport of football often means you take your focus elsewhere just enough for someone to knock you off your pedestal, particularly in a league like the NFL, where you're facing the premier talent in the country every single week. Hopefully, Walker and his teammates will think twice in the future before getting loose-lipped about what might be, and focus instead on what's directly ahead.
