ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

The New Mexico Department of Transportation is conducting a focused Interchange Operations Study on the Big I — the major interchange where I-40 and I-25 meet near the heart of Albuquerque.

This critical connection links two of the state's busiest highways and serves tens of thousands of drivers daily, offering access to schools, hospitals, shopping centers, jobs and neighborhoods.

While the Big I generally performs well, the ramps from eastbound and westbound I-40 to northbound I-25 have become a growing concern. During morning peak hours, these ramps see heavy congestion, long wait times and an increased risk of crashes.

The study builds on NMDO's 2022 I-40 Congestion Management Report and zeroes in on the specific traffic issues affecting these two ramps.
