HOUGHTON LAKE — Consumers Energy will begin construction this fall on a new Houghton Lake Substation to strengthen electric service for homes and businesses and support economic growth in the area.

According to a Sept. 23 news release, the substation, located at Knapp Road and Old US Highway 27, is expected to be completed by mid-2026. It is the third Consumers Energy has started this year in the region, along with the Skyline Substation in Grayling and the Backus Substation near Prudenville.
