MADISONVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A man faces charges of attempted first-degree murder after he allegedly tried to set a camper on fire with a woman inside on Sunday, court records said.

According to the affidavit of complaint, James Howard Williams, 43, broke into a camper on Brandy Hill Lane in Madisonville. He screwed the doors shut while he and a woman were still inside, then poured gasoline on himself and the camper floor before lighting it with a match, court records stated. He struck the woman multiple times, strangled her, then held a knife to her, according to the affidavit.

Williams also took the woman's purse, court records said.
