ASHEVILLE, N.C. —

A passenger is dead and a driver is in custody after an assault inside a car along Interstate 26 in Asheville, according to police.

Officers said they got a report about 3:20 a.m. Tuesday of a car on the side of the interstate near exit 33.

When officers arrived they found the passenger was a victim of a serious assault and died at the scene.

After negotiations, the driver got out of the car and was taken into custody.

This case is being investigated as a homicide.
