Donald Trump claimed Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine “should have taken just a few days” in a bizarre speech today.

Speaking at the United Nations’ General Assembly in New York for the first time since 2020, the US president seemed to suggest Russia’s war in Ukraine should have been faster, and more effective.

Putin invaded Ukraine back in February 2022 but failed to seize its capital Kyiv within the first few days as Ukrainian troops fought back.

Three and a half years later, Russia holds only a fifth of Ukrainian land.

But Trump said today he has been working “relentlessly to stop the killing in Ukraine”.

He then claimed the Ukraine war was only meant to be a “quick little skirmish” – and the drawn-out process is making Russia look bad.
