A speech from President Donald Trump is always, at best, only loosely tethered to reality. Trump will ignore inconvenient facts or details to tell whatever story is on his mind that day, leaving legions of journalists to try in vain to catch up with him.
The audience of the United Nations General Assembly, though, is used to such things – the UN is routinely addressed by absolute dictators, who rule their own country without even passing regard to anything like an electorate, laws, checks, or balances. All President Trump had to do was arrive, give his speech for his allotted 15-minute slot, and leave. That wasn’t quite how things went .
If there was an early warning sign things would go off-kilter, it was when Trump arrived at the lectern only to realise that his autocue was broken.
