One night last January, John Santy fell into a hole on a dog walk near his Canyon Creek home. A fifth-generation Parkite, Santy knows the area well, but this gap in the sidewalk was new and unmarked.

Santy finished the ski season working at a rental shop and ignored some pain. He has worked as an EMT and was raised by first responders, so was usually the one giving, rather than asking, for help.

His summer plan was to work in a mountain bike shop and trail ride, until a mundane twist led to incapacitating pain, emergency room visits and crutches. MRIs diagnosed a herniated and torn disc leaking fluid, inflaming nerves and his spinal cord.

Santy is doing physical therapy and will meet with a surgeon in October. As costs mount and he lives without working, he has created a GoFundMe.
