(WJW) -- The Internal Revenue Service is warning taxpayers about an increase in fraudulent tax schemes circulating on social media.
According to a news release, the IRS has seen a rise in false refund claims since 2022.
They said the false claim scams are fueled by misleading online posts that encourage taxpayers to file inaccurate returns.
The IRS reports scammers are posing as tax experts online, making claims promoting the misuse of credits like the Fuel Tax Credit and the Sick and Family Leave Credit.
“Many of the posts falsely claim that all taxpayers are eligible for credits they do not actually qualify for, such as those meant for self-employed individuals or businesses,” the IRS wrote in a news release.
